Ramsay's Fish and Chip Van

Established in 1980, Ramsay's fish and chip van provides freshly fried fish and chip suppers on an evening to villages in the Yorkshire Dales. We also provide outside and event catering.

Ramsay's Fish and Chip Van - The Story!

Around 1980 Pauline and Dick Ramsay, from a small village near Bedale, set up the business, buying a second hand van and converting it into a mobile fish and chip shop. From their base they started doing weekly rounds up into the Dales. They always provided some of the best fish and chips you could buy and Ramsay's van soon became part of the fabric and culture of the villages they visited. Larger than life characters that everyone knew, by the time they retired they were serving the 3rd generation of some families. They decided to retire and sell the van in 2019, sadly shortly after the sale, Dick passed away. He will always be fondly remembered by the Dales folk and visitors who bought fish and chips from the van.

When Pauline and Dick decided to retire and sell up, Ian Bell from Brecon Bar near Askrigg, made the decision to buy the business and run it alongside Abbotside Events, his outside catering company. Ian says, "Ramsay's van is so important to a remote area like this, they provided more than regular fish and chips, it had/has a real social and cultural value. The important thing, before purchasing, was finding two local Dales people to run it who understood this". Ian approached Askrigg residents Eddie and Jennifer Baker, with a job offer to manage and run the van. Both had previous knowledge of hospitality in the Dales and were keen to turn their hand to this venture.
Eddie has always had jobs revolving around hospitality within the Yorkshire Dales. He loves to spend his free time at home with Jennifer and their two cats where you will find him watching all types of sport or in the village playing in local pub sport teams.

Jennifer has worked locally in pubs and shops. She is our head of marketing and spends most her work time in the office and behind the scenes. She adores the theatre and music concerts regularly dragging Eddie along with her. Her ideal day off is spent at home with friends, family, her black Labrador, Asti, and her two cats, Bu and Bow watching a Disney film.

Gary is our newest team member and has taken over from Jennifer on the van, he is enjoying learning the secrets to making great fish and chips. He has worked in the building trade most of his working life, apart from running a small sandwich van for a year. He started work as an apprentice bricklayer and over the years he worked his way up to become a project manager. Then in December 2022 Gary and his wife and their dog Molly relocated from Selby to Richmond to seek a less stressful way of life in the dales, and also to be near to their daughter and her partner who also relocated to Richmond last year.
